"Is Remi the brother of Francois?"  During research that has been conducted by a number of genealogists over the past few years, questions concerning the relationship of Remi Caisse to Francois Caisse dit L'dragon have arisen.  Until my contact with Gilles L. Caisse in Montreal, the only real knowledge of Remi that I had was from Michael Caisse of Waltham, Mass.  Mike had taken a trip to France, several years ago and had the opportunity to search for documents relating to Francois' origin.  While most of the documents were in Latin or old French, Mike was able to recover a birth record for Remi Caisse(Quesse).  It clearly states that the parents were Etienne and Michelle Mougin(Mongin).  The birth took place in Gray la ville in January of 1704.  We know

FRENCH-CANADIEN FARMER CIRCA 1750

FRENCH CANADIEN    MERCHANT CIRCA 1750

that Francois's parents are indeed Etienne and Michelle and that he was born in the same general vicinity in 1705.
On September 28 of '98, Gilles sent me an e-mail concerning the birth of Francois in 1725 with a mother identified as Marie Renaud.  The fall '98 issue of "Les memoires de la Societe Genealogique Canadienne-Francaise" in an article by Anne-Isabelle Martin had stated so.  THAT ARTICLE IS INCORRECT.

There was another Etienne Caisse in Seveux, who was married to Marie Renaud and whose first child was Francois-Philippe Caisse(Quesse).  I believe that the second Etienne was a child of Etienne and Michelle.  If we assume he was about 20 when he had his first child in 1725, then he would have been born around 1705.  We know that Etienne and Michelle were married before 1704(Remi's birth), so this is a distinct possibility.  Our Francois was definately not the one born in 1725, but probably was that child's uncle.
